ISLAMABAD - Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Friday discussed with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif the matters concerning the implementation of National Action Plan to combat terrorism and extremism.
General Raheel Sharif called on Nawaz Sharif at the PM’s House and briefed him on the ongoing operation against the militants in tribal areas.
The sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting informed The Nation that both were satisfied with the pace of the National Action Plan implementation.
Establishment of special courts under the army officers also came under discussion at the meeting.
The sources further said the army chief also took the prime minister into confidence over his recent visit to Beijing where he had held meetings with the top Chinese political and military leadership.
He also informed Nawaz Sharif of the last corps commanders’ conference.
The COAS also apprised the premier of the successes in the operation Zarb-e-Azb in North Waziristan and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, Sharif shared with the army chief the progress report on implementation of National Action Plan according to which the law-enforcement agencies have arrested 10,616 suspects on different charges in 14,886 search operations conducted in all parts of the country since the implementation of the National Action Plan started to eliminate terrorism and extremism from the country following attack on Peshawar school.
It was further stated in the report that the security agencies conducted 9,413 operations in Punjab, 1,577 in Sindh, 2,724 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 39 in Balochistan, 336 in Islamabad, 720 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), 21 in Gilgit-Baltiststan (GB) and 56 in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).
Those arrested were 1,934 from the Punjab, 1,533 from Sindh, 6,038 from KP, 460 from Balochistan, 505 from Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), seven from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), 10 from GB and 129 from Fata.
The security agencies arrested 1,806 in the Punjab, 169 in KP, one in Balochistan and 59 in ICT for misusing loudspeaker.
In total, 540 cases – 455 in the Punjab, 34 in KP, four in Balochistan, 46 in AJK and one in GB – were registered for spreading hate speech and material.
The law-enforcement agencies also arrested 405 people and sealed 41 shops on the same charges.
According to the data, around 3,416 Afghan refugees –844 from KP, 195 from Balochistan, one from Islamabad and 376 from Fata – were deported.
The Federal Investigation Agency registered 18 cases for money transfer through Hawala Hundi, arrested 24 people and recovered Rs 71.
5 million from them.
Three cases were registered for suspicious transactions and the accused arrested.
The agency also registered money laundering cases against five people and arrested them.
In total, 161 calls were received – 105 in Punjab, 18 each in Sindh and KP, five in Balochistan and 15 in ICT – on anti-terror helpline 1717.
Around 1,250 intelligence-based operations were also conducted throughout the country.

Pakistan's designated Permanent Representative to the UN and Ambassador, Dr Maliha Lodhi, called on Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif at the PM House on Friday.
The premier wished her good luck on her new assignment and said that it is important to remove misperceptions about Pakistan on a range of issues.
He said this being the 70th anniversary year of the founding of the United Nations makes it important that Pakistan's voice is heard in the many events taking place during the year.
Dr Lodhi thanked the government for reposing confidence in her for this important assignment and assured the prime minister that she would try her best to live up to the challenge of protecting Pakistan's interest and projecting country's principled stand on important matters prioritised by the government.
