ISLAMABAD - Acknowledging the role played by Pakistan Armed Forces in fighting the menace of terrorism, US Centcom Commander General Lloyd Austin on Wednesday assured Pakistan of the support US will extend to its friends and partner.
General Austin who led a high-level defence delegation held out these assurances to the military leaders of Pakistan in separate meetings.
He met with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif at the GHQ and discussed the matters of mutual interest and regional security.
The Director General ISPR in his tweets said, the visiting dignitary acknowledged the Pakistan Army sacrifices and efforts in the war on terror and in bringing peace in Pakistan and the region.
General Justin paid homage to the martyrs and laid a floral wreath. The Commander US Centcom also called on General Rashad Mahmood, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and during the meeting, both the dignitaries discussed the matters related to mutual interest.
Later, General Lloyd Austin and Lt General Anthony Rock, US ODRP Chief, alongwith the defence delegation also called on Secretary Defence Lt General (Retd) Muhammad Alam Khattak in his office at the Ministry of Defence.
During the meeting, Commander CENTCOM Gen Lloyd Austin acknowledged that Pakistan is a stabilising factor in the wake of US/ISAF drawdown.
“For attaining the goal of lasting peace in the region especially Afghanistan, Pakistan’s role continues to be crucial,” a statement of Ministry of Defence quoted the US General as stating.
It said that Secretary Defence Lt General (Retd) Muhammad Alam Khattak apprised the CENTCOM Chief regarding the help and support, Pakistan is extending to the Afghan govt.
The delegation appreciated the role of Pakistan in supporting the talks between Taliban and Afghan govt alongside its effort to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Secretary highlighted the need for expanding the scope of defence ties
between US and Pakistan stating that “Pakistan is at the frontline fighting for the stability of the region.”
The Commander CENTCOM said that he fully acknowledges the Pakistan’s effort in the fight against terror and the sacrifices that the people and the Armed Forces have rendered in this regard.
