RAWALPINDI: For any possible flood in Nullah Leh, Army troops have been put on alert in Rawalpindi to respond instantly for rescue efforts, ISPR said.
The ISPR's statement came after incessant rainfall increased water level in Nullah Leh.
Authorities declared an emergency in Rawalpindi and surrounding areas, warning people of possible flooding.
District Coordination Officer (DCO) Rawalpindi Sajid Zafar Dall said all arrangements were in place to tackle any flash-flood like situation in Nullah Leh following the ongoing spell of rain.
Talking to newsmen, he said 'alert-sirens' were blown when the water level in the Leh, the major tributary through which the rainwater of the twin cities is drained, touched the 14-feet level.
Now, he said, the water has started receding and the current flow level (recorded at 9:00 p.m) was 12.34 feet, which could increase as there was prediction of more rain on Monday night.
"All rescue teams are on high alert to meet any emergency situation," he said, adding that 'evacuation-sirens' would be sounded if the water level crossed the 20-feet level aimed at alerting the people living in low-lying areas of the Rawalpindi city.
The Leh has the capacity to contain 24 feet of water.
In Wah Cantt, several people were buried under the debris after a two-storey building caved in. Children and women were among those buried under the rubble.
"Two children have been rescued safely from the collapsed building," Deputy Commissioner of Rawalpindi told SAMAA.
He said that efforts were under way to complete the rescue operation in two to three hours.
Meanwhile, eight people were killed in different accidents caused by heavy downpour in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
