Protest lodged with India over villager’s killing at LoC

ISLAMABAD/SIALKOT - A day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned his Pakistani counterpart to break self-imposed deadlock in ties, his army troops resorted to unprovoked firing along Line of Control in Azad Kashmir, killing a 60-year-old villager on Saturday.

Without wasting anytime, Pakistan lodged a protest with India through diplomatic channels over the killing of 60-year-old Muhammad Aslam, caused by BSF firing in the Rawlakot Sector.
The man was an inhabitant of the area and was engaged in cutting grass 150 meters inside the LoC on Pakistan side.
Condemning the incident, Pakistan called upon India to restrain its security forces from firing on the civilians and stop the ceasefire violations across the Line of Control as well as the working boundary.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 60-year-old resident of Polas village, Muhammad Aslam s/o Mirza, embraced martyrdom at LOC in the Rawlakot Sector Saturday afternoon due to the unprovoked Indian firing.
According to details, he received three bullets in abdomen while he was cutting grass 100-150 meters towards his own side of LOC. “Pakistani troops responded to the Indian firing in a befitting manner,” the ISPR statement said.
The Foreign Office said the government of Pakistan offers its condolences to the bereaved family of the victim.
Tension along the LoC and the working boundary has intensified, resulting in casualties of the civilian population. On January 30, an exchange of fire across the working boundary between Pakistan and India left two women injured besides damaging several houses.
The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) also started unprovoked mortar shelling on Sialkot border villages in Charwah Sector of the Working Boundary.
According to senior officials of the Chenab Rangers, the Indian BSF, in this fresh spell of mortar shelling, again targeted the civilian population in Sialkot border villages, Charwah, Joyian, Harpal, Anula, Akhnoor, Ruraki Awanan, Mairajkey, Kotli Khawaja, Dhamaala, Bajra Garhi, Umeranwali, Thathi Meendarwal, Rangor, Bhagiyari of Charwah Sector of Sialkot Working Boundary here. The Indian BSF started shelling at 6pm, which continued till late tonight.
Some local people said several heavy mortar shells fired by Indian BSF landed into the fields and did not explode. The Chenab Rangers retaliated effectively, silencing the Indian guns, the senior CR officials added. There was no report of any casualty in the Indian shelling on Sialkot border villages.
It appears expedient to mention here that a day before the killing of the Pakistani villager in the Rawlakot Sector by the Border Security Force, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a telephone call to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to discuss the regional peace, revival of the stalled talks and the upcoming cricket World Cup match between the two neighbours. He told Nawaz Sharif that the Indian foreign secretary would visit Pakistan soon, hinting at resumption of foreign secretary-level talks between the two countries. He also wished good luck to Pakistan team.
