Khyber airstrikes kill 20 terrorists

KHYBER AGENCY - At least 20 terrorists including key commanders were killed in airstrikes carried out by security forces in Khyber Agency on Friday.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations, the PAF carried out airstrikes in remote area of Khyber Agency by hitting the hideouts of the militants. Resultantly at least 20 militants were killed. Besides, as many as18 terrorist were also injured in the attack, it added.
The Pak Army began a major operation Zarb-e-Azb against Taliban and other militant strongholds in North Waziristan in June last year and also launched a full scale offensive against militants in Khyber Agency calling it Khyber-II.
Since the launch of the operation so far, 2,763 terrorists have been killed, 837 hideouts destroyed,” military spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa tweeted last week.
Apart from, at least 347 soldiers had embraced martyrdom. Nearly one million civilians have been displaced by the offensive after the military ordered them to leave their homes ahead of the operation. However, the areas in North Waziristan Agency that have been cleared of militants, the IDPs repatriation have already started to their homes back.
AFP adds: The strikes took place in Khyber tribal district where the military began its latest offensive in October 2014 carrying out airstrikes and using artillery, mortars and ground troops.
The area is remote and off-limits to journalists, making it difficult to verify the army’s claims - and the number and identity of those killed.
Pakistan has been battling insurgency for over a decade following the late 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan. The army began a major campaign against Taliban and other militant strongholds in the North Waziristan tribal area in June last year. Authorities have since vowed to intensify operations, using air strikes, artillery and mortars to take back territory both in the border regions and other parts of the country.
