Pakistan Navy celebrates World Environment Day

KARACHI: With an aim to highlight the significance of the environment and enhance awareness among Pakistan Navy personnel on environmental issues and their effects on human health, Pakistan Navy celebrated World Environment Day with fervour and great enthusiasm, said a statement issued by ISPR here on Friday.




Various environmental awareness activities including seminars, walks for a cause and cleaning campaigns were also conducted at field/units levels to commemorate the day. World Environment Day is the United Nations flagship environmental event, celebrated every year on June 5 around the world. While commencing in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, its commemorations are entrusted to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The purpose of World Environment Day is to focus worldwide attention on the importance of the environment and stimulate political attention and action. This year’s theme of World Environment Day is “Seven Billion Dreams; One Planet. Consume with care”. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah in a message on the occasion to Field Commands and Pakistan Navy Units urged to promote awareness and inculcate a sense of responsibility among all to save and preserve our environment.

The Naval Chief reiterated all to re-affirm the commitment to make every effort for betterment of the environment especially marine environment.

He said that being a major sufferer of marine pollution in Karachi harbour, Pakistan Navy has initiated numerous actions ranging from collection of solid waste from harbour to sensitising concerned Government and Non-Government organisations and Departments to initiate effective measures against marine pollution.
