Zarb-e-Azb to be extended to settled areas

ISLAMABAD - Political and military leadership on Wednesday discussed the matters concerning the ongoing Zarb-e-Azb operation against militants, return of temporarily displaced persons to the areas cleared of militants in South Waziristan and measures to make the implementation of the National Action Plan more effective.

At the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the military leadership gave a detailed view of the ongoing operation against militants in the tribal areas and its extension to the settled areas.
They also informed the participants of the steps taken by the armed forces to make things difficult for the militants in the restive tribal areas.
The sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting revealed that it was a unanimous view of the civil and military leadership to further step up the pace of Zerb-e-Azb and also extend it to the settled areas of the country because there were reports that militants had moved to the settled areas after the launch of the operation in South Waziristan.
These sources further revealed the prime minister wanted more close and coordinated efforts by the law-enforcement and intelligence agencies to proactively deal with the menace. The meeting, which was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif; Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, ISI DG Lt-Gen Rizwan Akhtar and other senior civil and military officials, reviewed progress on the operation Zarb-e-Azb and discussed the matters relating to the return of temporarily displaced persons (TDPs) to the areas cleared of militants.
The sources said the prime minister wanted to see the TDPs to settle down in their homes and assured them of all-out logistic and monetary support from the federal government. He stressed the need of close coordination between the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhw governments in this connection as there were reports that TDPs were reluctant to go back to their homes because of poor infrastructure and unavailability of adequate civic facilities.
The military operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched in June last following a terrorist attack on the Karachi airport and failure of peace negotiations between the government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
Over a million people from various towns and villages of South Waziristan were displaced due to the military operation as the army wanted to completely flush out militants from the area and smash their sanctuaries.
