Polls in G-B to be held under army supervision: CEC

GILGIT - Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (Retd) Syed Tahir Ali Shah said that elections of G-B Legislative Assembly would be held under the supervision of Pakistan Army. "Pak Army personnel will be deployed at polling stations of Gilgit, Diamer and other sensitive areas," he stated this while addressing a press conference in Gilgit on Saturday.

The CEC said the commission had decided to hold elections in Gilgit, Diamer and other sensitive areas under the supervision of Pak Army following the demand of political parties and recommendations of returning officers. He said the conduct of free, fair and transparent polls would be ensured at all costs. Regarding arrangements, he said, an important meeting would be held on Monday with Force Commander and Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan.
He said it was not the duty of election commissioner to take action on  news items. "Political leaders blame election commissioner in press conferences, which is not the right way.
They should submit written applications to chief election commissioner along with two solid proofs if they want action on their complaints," he added.
The Chief Election Commissioner  said that he recently stopped activities of Governor G-B when he planned to distribute laptops in a university.
