Islamabad - In a major breakthrough, Islamabad and Kabul signed a historic bilateral accord in which key intelligence agencies of Pakistan and Afghanistan would work together to fight terrorism.
Both the neighbours come closer last year in the wake of new leadership in Afghanistan and recovered from a long trust deficit left by the former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Although there was no official confirmation in Pakistan till late, credible sources maintained that Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and National Directorate of Security (NDS) of Afghanistan have on Monday signed the agreement.
According to sources, both the ISI and NDS would share intelligence to execute complimentary and coordinated operations on their respective sides.
It was learnt that both the intelligence agencies will track down the common enemy belonging to any terrorist outfit without discrimination or inimical forces that try to destabilise peace and stability in the two countries.
There have series of meetings held between the senior officials of the two countries since horrific terrorist attack on Pakistan Army School in Peshawar last year.
Two weeks ago Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership visited Kabul and met the Afghan leadership including President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.
Both sides resolved to join hands to tackle the major challenges including terrorism that hinders peace, stability and development.
The move comes after Pakistan made it clear to the Afghan nation and it neither harbours any interest for strategic depth nor has got any favourite in Afghanistan and declared the Afghan Taliban’s spring offensive code named “Azm” as terrorism.
Both sides reiterated their commitment not to allow any third party to use territory of either of two countries to destabilise it.
Pakistani authorities warned the Afghan counterparts of the threat from India’s intelligence agency RAW for using Afghan soil against Pakistan.
Sources further said the agreement also allows ISI to train and equip the Afghan Intelligence – National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel.
The Afghan intelligence and ISI will also jointly interrogate the detained insurgents based on the agreement which was signed two days back by the Afghan deputy NDS chief.
This comes after ISI chief Gen Rizwan Akhtar visited Kabul nearly two weeks ago to meet President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.
Gen Akhtar’s visit was mainly focused on peace process and Pakistan’s support to persuade the Taliban militants to join peace process.
