Indiscriminate action against banned outfits decided

KARACHI - The apex committee meeting, chaired by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif on Thursday, decided indiscriminate action against banned outfits and criminals regardless of their political, religious, sectarian, ethnic or other affiliations. 
Gen Raheel Sharif vowed to continue across-the-board operations at an increased tempo and hunt down terrorists committing heinous acts.




The high-level meeting, held at the Corps Headquarters, was attended by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Governor Ishratul Ebad Khan, Rangers DG Maj-Gen Bilal Akbar, Karachi Corps Commander Lt-Gen Naveed Mukhtar, ISI DG Lt-Gen Rizwan Akhtar, ISPR DG Maj-Gen Asim Bajwa and others.
According to ISPR DG Asim Bajwa, the meeting assessed the ongoing operations against terrorists. The army chief directed the intelligence agencies to effectively follow the existing leads” in all operations. Weekly apex committee meetings were also announced.
The meeting, held a day after the horrific attack on the bus carrying Ismaili community members in which 45 people were killed near Karachi’s Safoora Chowrangi, also decided to implement effective policing and surveillance in the vast suburbs of Karachi to prevent sneaking terrorist attacks.
Maj-Gen Asim Bajwa said all criminals and abettors would be arrested regardless of their political, religious, sectarian, ethnic or other affiliations. The spokesman also said a system was being devised for strict checking at all entry and exit points in the country and that an internal subcommittee would allow more effective civil-military cooperation in order to increase the efficiency of information-based operations. 
The participants of the meeting agreed on the need to extend governance and increase presence of the law-enforcement agencies in the areas of Karachi that are weakly governed spaces. They also stressed the need to investigate channels of funding for terrorists, militants and criminals. 
The meeting held that there was also a need to appoint public sector officials transparently and on the basis of merit. An oversight mechanism was recommended for the sustainability of transparency in hiring practices.
Agencies add: The meeting also decided that the operation would be extended to target not only criminal organisations but also their workers and abettors. The meeting resolved to carry the operation forward with more vigour, intensity and to consolidate the gains that have been made.
150 SUSPECTS ARRESTED
According to a private TV channel, Rangers launched raids on suspected hideouts of banned organisations in different parts of Karachi, arresting over 150 suspects.
The raids were carried out in Sohrab Goth, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shah Faisal Colony, Korangi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad and Orangi. 
A statement issued by the paramilitary force said the arrested personnel included suspected hitmen, terror suspects working for banned outfits and criminals associated with the Lyari gang war. 
Weapons, including SMGs, were also recovered from many of those arrested, said the statement.
According to Rangers spokesperson, those arrested have been transferred to an undisclosed location for investigation.
On Thursday evening, extra contingent of police conducted a search operation in Frontier Colony, SITE in District West – the area known for the presence of militants belonging to different outfits. The operation was carried out on a tip-off about the presence of suspected militants. The entire locality was cordoned off during the operation and no one was allowed to go in or out during the operation.
As many as 40 suspects including suspected militants were detained during a search operation conducted in the Frontier Colony locality of SITE. Though the identities of the suspected detained during the operation were not disclosed, however, the police said some suspected militants along with weapons were also apprehended.
Meanwhile, collective autopsy report of at least 43 victims of Safoora Chowrangi massacre on Thursday was issued.
According to the report, a woman and a man were killed using a sharp edged weapon. As many as 25 passengers received at least three to four bullets. The report further states that the victims were targeted on chest, head and neck. At least 18 people received one bullet each. Moreover, two passengers were shot two bullets each.
