Army kills 16 ‘militants’ in NW Pakistan

Karachi, Pakistan –  Pakistani army jets continued to pound militant hideouts in restive North Waziristan tribal region for the second straight day on Thursday killing 13 suspected militants, officials said.

The strikes have raised the total number of casualties in the last two days to 31, a senior military official who wished not to be named told Anadolu Agency.
Five militant hideouts were also destroyed in the airstrikes near the town of Datta Khel, which is located at the Afghan border, and serves as one of the few last bastions for Taliban militants.
North Waziristan is one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal areas of Pakistan. It has been a battleground between the army and Taliban militants since June 15, 2014 following a full-scale operation against Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a coalition of different insurgent groups in Pakistan.
According to Pakistan army, over 2,600 suspected militants have been killed in aerial strikes and clashes with Taliban in the last 10 months. Over 100 soldiers have also lost their lives during this period.
The military operation has displaced nearly 1 million tribesmen from North Waziristan.
