Islamabad - Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif said on Tuesday that stability is returning to the country as a result of Operation Zarb-e-Azb and they can’t take focus away from targeting terrorism in Fata.
Addressing the military officers during his visit to Bahawalpur on Tuesday, General Raheel Sharif said, “Peaceful environment in and around the country is the army’s top priority.”
Director General ISPR Major General Asim Bajwa quoted the army chief as saying on Twitter that focus cannot be taken away from targeting terrorism in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and breaking militant links to the rest of the country. He paid tributes to resilience, professionalism and sacrifices of troops in fight against terrorism.
The Army launched the military operation in June last year and has killed hardened terrorists and destroyed their key hideouts in Fata, which is a semi-autonomous tribal region in northwestern Pakistan. The region had been a home to Taliban and other religious extremist organisations including al-Qaeda. Intensifying their efforts to counter militants, security forces upped their action in the region through operation Zarb-i-Azb, Khyber-One and Khyber-Two.
During his visit to North Waziritan along former Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, COAS General Raheel Sharif while reiterating unflinching resolve of the armed forces said that the terrorists have no place to hide and they will be hit wherever they are found. They reviewed progress in operation Zarb-e-Azb as well as future plans to purge the border region of all terrorists and also met troops fighting what has been dubbed a decisive battle against terrorism.
Both the army chief and air chief acknowledged that a new level of “jointness” between the army and air force had been achieved in the ongoing operation. The efficacy of the use of air power with ground operation was also appreciated. Both commanders reaffirmed their commitment to eliminate terrorism. The operation would continue till the job is finished, they said.
The army chief while addressing the third convocation of CMH Lahore Medical College last month also called for making collective efforts to give the next generation a terrorism-free and prosperous Pakistan and provide them a conducive environment which could help them apply their knowledge and creativity to achieve optimum effects for national growth.
“Our young and upcoming generation is our future. And it can only be saved if we make joint efforts for giving them a terror-free and prosperous Pakistan,” the COAS said while addressing the third convocation of CMH Lahore Medical College. “We are taking menace of terrorism head on and will go anywhere in the country to eliminate it completely,” he pledged.
He said Pakistan Army besides performing its role as custodian of national frontiers had always been a forerunner in terms of its contribution to national development. Gen Sharif commended role of Army Medical Corps in serious disasters, calamities and military operations against the evil of terrorism and extremism had been highly impressive.
