COAS sees a ‘design’ behind recent Karachi killings

KARACHI: Taking a vow to wipe out all the mafias hollowing out Pakistan’s economic hub,Chief of the Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif Friday patted on the backs of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) especially Rangers for maintaining peace and order during NA 246 (Karachi III) by-elections, military said.


“The COAS visited V Corps Headquarters in Karachi where Corps Commander and DG Rangers briefed him on the operational preparedness, ongoing operation in the city, and latest law and order situation,” Director General Inter Services Public Relations Maj Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a tweet.
Gen Raheel’s statement comes hours after the broad-daylight murder of a professor in Karachi.
 Waheed-ur-Rehman was an assistant professor at the Mass Communication Department of Karachi University. Unknown gunmen riddled his car with bullets near Institute of Heart Diseases in Block 16 of Federal B Area. He died on the spot.
Just days ago a social worker, Sabeen Mehmud, was gunned down after hosting a talk on Balochistan rights. Ms Mehmud, who ran 'The Second Floor', a cafe that organises debates and art events, had just left the venue with her mother when her car was attacked by gunmen in the upmarket neighbourhood of Defence Housing Authority (DHA).
An American national, Debra Lobo,a member of faculty at the city's Jinnah Medical and Dental College, was shot and injured by unknown assailants a couple of weeks back. Lobo, 55, was shot and wounded in Karachi Thursday, officials said, with leaflets found at the scene claiming the attack on behalf of the Islamic State group. Lobo is an Associate Professor of Community Health Science.
In September last year, Dr Shakil Auj, the dean faculty of Islamic Studies at Karachi University, was also shot dead by unknown bike riders near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal society.
